This mirror handle is from Arabia Felix, a region that roughly fits the borders of modern Yemen. It is made of nicely carved stone in the shape of a woman holding her arms up to support the frame of the mirror. The flattened face is without much detail, with the long slender nose being the focal point, a characteristic style for statuary in Arabia Felix. One of the arms and part of the frame are missing. The central disc of the frame which once held the mirror has a roughened surface which helps the adhesive used to attach the mirror grip the surface more easily. The mirror would have been made of some variety of highly polished metal, likely silver, bronze, or copper.
Arabia Felix - CA. 500 - 100 BC
Dimensions: H: 7 1/2 in., (19.1 cm.)
Missing an arm and part of the frame for the mirror. Mirror itself is missing. Some minor chipping to base. Minor wear to surface consistent with age.
