Adam and Eve find the body of Abel
Oil on canvas
131 x 127 cm
The work is inspired, with variations, by an engraving by Girolamo Fagiuoli (active in Bologna in 1539 and died in 1574) from an 'invention by Francesco Salviati, published by Antoine Lafréry in Rome between 1530 and 1560.
In Venice, at the beginning of the 17th century, a series of painters emerged who brought forward the manner of the previous century, especially the modes of Tintoretto with elements of the expressive elegance of Paolo Veronese and Titian. They are called, since the time of Boschini who coined the name, the Painters of the Seven Manners. Given the very fine painting technique and the profound religious and human pathos that this conveys, it is plausible that it was painted by one of these important authors who answer to the name of Andrea Vicentino, Santo or Sante Peranda, Antonio Aliense, Pietro Malombra, Leonardo Corona, Girolamo Pilotti, and Palma the Younger.
Daniel Seiter (Vienna 1647 - Turin 1705) attributed.
