Leroy & Pons, Restoration period
Mantel clock with Silenus and Bacchus
in patinated bronze, featuring Silène looking after the young Bacchus in a rich naturalistic décor of plants and grapevines. The dial, signed "Leroy à Reims", shows the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in railway time, with winding and striking keys at four and eight o'clock. Numbered movement stamped "Pons Médaille d'Or Paris 1827".
It rests on a double-stepped Sienna yellow marble base with a slight doucine, and rich ormolu ornamentation of ivy, ribbons, water and acanthus leaves, garlands of flowers and musical instruments. Four ormolu scrolled feet.
Watchmaker: Pierre Honoré César Pons (1773-1851). Active in Paris until 1846, he revived watchmaking in Saint-Nicolas d'Aliermont. His movements won awards at various exhibitions, notably in 1819, 1827, 1839 and 1844, where he received three gold medals and one silver. He sold his company to Delepine.
Watchmaker and finisher: Hippolyte Leroy in Reims (b. 1807). Tardy reports that he was active in the Place du Parvis around 1850-1859, creating an electric balance wheel acquired by Breguet; in 1854, Maumené published a report on his electric system.
