PAUL JULIUS JUNGHANNS* (Vienna 1876 - 1958 Duesseldorf) Man with horse oil/fiber board, 6 x 8 cm signed Julius Junghanns, verso signature stamp Julius Junghanns ESTIMATE °€ 100 - 200 STARTING PRICE °€ 100 Painter, graphic artist and illustrator - predominantly impressionistic animal depictions, also landscape painting, influenced by H.v.Zügel. Grew up in Dresden, completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer while attending the Dresden School of Applied Arts under M. Frey. 1896-1898 studied painting at the Dresden Art Academy with A.Pohle, 1898-1904 further studies at the Munich Art Academy with H.v.Zügel. Worked as an illustrator for the Munich “Youth”. 1904-1944 professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy (head of the master class for animal and plein air painting), March 1933-September 1933 acting head of the art academy. Represented at the Viennale in Venice in 1910 and 1938. Member of the Association of Drawing Artists in Munich and the Munich Secession. Represented in the Hagenbund for the first time in 1904, becoming a member from 1905 to 1911. Referred to as a “rural member” in the catalog for the Hagenbund exhibition in Košice in 1922 (no work exhibited). Works include Vienna Museum, Neue Pinakothek Munich, Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, Municipal Museum Düsseldorf, Municipal Museum Hagen, Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh (USA). Prizes, honors (selection): 1906 Gold Medal for Art and Science from Prussia; 1907 Kaiser Wilhelm II Gold Medal for Art; 1941 Goethe Medal.
