Lattice; Thailand, 19th century.
Wrought iron.
Measurements: 59 x 37 x 4 cm (x2).
Set of lattices made of wrought iron. The two pieces have the same design based on an intricate vegetal pattern of warped shapes and openwork design. In each of the cases in the central area you can see the representation of a young girl with her breast uncovered.
The word lattice comes from the Latin zelus or sky. It is an element whose purpose is the enclosure of spaces such as windows and balconies. The function of the lattice is double, since they allow the entrance of light and air to the interior, at the same time that they hide the interior. Lattices can be made of many materials, with simple or more elaborate designs.
