Japanese embroidery. MEIJI period, 19th century.
"Landscape with river".
In silk.
Measurements. 178 x 110 cm; 123 x 191 cm (frame).
Delicate Japanese embroidery from the Meiji period depicting a bucolic landscape with an arched red wooden bridge, a type of bridge characteristic of the Zen parks of Kyoto. A stream meanders from the mountains and crosses it. It is bordered by lush vegetation. The valley is lined with small wooden houses that blend in with nature. The ensemble composes a landscape characteristic of the Meiji period. In the embroidery, silk threads have been used in shades of ochre, sienna, reddish and intense green, which transmit a vivid and full atmosphere. As the depiction of the vegetation is so precise, they seem to come to life, and the stitches flow like precise brushstrokes.
