Three folios of a Koran Ink, polychrome pigments and gold on paper Iran, 16th century Pages (including reinforced margins): 27.5 x 21.2 cm Calligraphic composition: 20.3 x 13.7 cm These folios taken from a 16th-century Persian Qur'an begin with the last verse of Sura 68 Al-Qalam (68:52), followed by the title of Sura 69 Al-Haqqah and its 52 verses, then Sura 70 Al-Ma'arij up to verse 22. The naskh text is spread over 9 lines per page. Lines 1, 5 and 9 are written in broad thuluth in blue on a background of fine pink squares, while the intermediate lines are written in black ink. Verse separations take the form of small polychrome and gold medallions. The two sura titles are inscribed in illuminated cartouches with gold floral decoration on a blue background. An illuminated mandorla adorns one of the margins. (Mottling, holes and reinforcements on the outer edges of the margins).
