Set of 35 leaves of a large Koran Ink, polychrome pigments and gold on paper Iran or Levant, 14th century Page heights between 29 and 32 cm Page width between 22 and 27 cm This set of leaves is taken from a large 14th-century Qur'an, in beautiful muhaqqaq calligraphy spread over 11 lines within blue and gold framing fillets. Verse separations are indicated by gold flowers outlined in blue. It comprises 23 folios adorned with large illuminated cartouches, all different and very elaborate, containing the Sura titles written in beautiful calligraphy (kufic, thuluth, muhaqqaq) on a background of floral scrolls, arabesques or fine squares. Fragments of illuminated marginal vignettes are visible in the often trimmed margins. 9 folios with numerous old restorations and retouching.
