Two pages from a Shahnameh - Rustam laments over the body of his son Sohrab, and The Fight between Esfandyar and Arjasp Ink, polychrome pigments, silver and gold on paper Iran, Isfahan or Masshad, circa 1650 Sight: 31.7 x 20.4 cm These two miniatures are taken from a Shahnameh (Book of Kings) by Firdousi. These profuse scenes combine a vivid palette, flourishing vegetation and richly illuminated margins in an innovative style developed in Iran with the influence of the painter Muhammad Qasim. The first depicts the hero Rustam before the body of his son Sohrab, mortally wounded in their duel. The hero laments the fact that it is only after he has dealt him the fatal blow that Rustam realizes he has just fought his son. The second page shows Esfandyar and Arjasp in combat.
