Gui Arnoux (1886-1951) - Maurice Barrès, the patriotic writer. Circa 1915. Devambez printer. 50x32.5cm. Original poster, lithograph, not canvas-backed. Condition A- marginal tears, paper yellowed. The artist depicts the writer full-length, wearing his academician's habit. In the background is written "Metz" in reference to his Lorraine origins. But above all, the churches of France are evoked. Stéphane Bern before his time, from 1910 Barrès published articles aimed at raising awareness of the (often voluntary) abandonment and ruin of France's churches, following the 1905 law. He also led parliamentary campaigns to this end, saving hundreds of buildings in the process.
