Signed and dated in the plate lower left Preziosi 1865
A Maltese painter trained at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, Amadeo Preziosi moved to Istanbul in the 1840s. There, he produced extensive drawings and prints of life in the capital of the Ottoman Empire, which he sold to travelers. His output, published in part in two albums, Stamboul, souvenirs d'Orient and Souvenirs du Caire, is one of the most iconic of Orientalism.
