Large Japanese lacquer and ormolu case, decorated with landscapes and birds in poly-lobed reserves and aventurine surrounds, with ormolu frames (reported at a later date). 17th century. H. 38 cm - W. 78 cm - D. 32 cm PFD Restorations, notably to the central cartouche of the lid Provenance : Paris sale, Europ Auction, January 18, 2012, lot 110. Bibliographical reference: O. Impey and C. Jörg, Japanese export lacquer, 1580-1850, Amsterdam, 2005. A number of pictorial-style boxes have been identified, with similar shapes and decorations. A suite of six boxes of different sizes and decorations is now in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen (Impey and Jörg, op. cit., pp. 149 and 319). Another box in the Groninger Museum in Groningen (Netherlands), signed "Kisibei", features comparable decoration and, in particular, similar reserves (Impey & Jörg, op. cit., p. 153).
