During his summer stays in Germany, Feininger frequently portrayed medieval views of small northern villages such as Niedergrunstedt, Kolberg and Ribnitz in sketchbooks. As his son Lux recalls in an introductory text to the catalogue “Lyonel Feininger”, published by the Galleria il Castello in Trento on the occasion of the 1991 exhibition of drawings and watercolours, “the quick drawings were carriers of hermetically sealed ideas, thoughts and feelings so dear to the artist”.
