DEBUSSY Claude (1862 - 1918) L.A.S. "Claude", Vendredi [22] février 1895, to Pierre LOUŸS; 2 pages in-8, envelope.
Beautiful letter to his friend Pierre Louÿs.
"I hope that the beauty of the landscapes reflected passionately in the eyes of your various girlfriends holds you back enough not to care about my writing; so I won't look any longer for vague excuses!
I'm working on things that will only be understood by the grandchildren of the twentieth century; only they will see that "clothes don't make the musician", they will tear away the veils of idols, under which there was only a sad skeleton (assent on various Heavenly benches, left).
I greet with joy your entry into Music, as of now.
- Durand et fils - ask me to beg you to keep your works for them.
To my great regret, I was unable to hear Chilpéric, but this evening I shall go and hear the music of E. de Polignac, and I hope that this will replace it.
Decidedly, Beethoven's 14th quat. is one long smoke and mirrors! in spite of what the young metaphysicians of Art and Life say about it - and don't let us be bothered any more with old furniture that hasn't even kept the perfume of its century!
Correspondence, 1895-7
