RAVEL Maurice (1875 - 1937) L.A.S. "Maurice Ravel", Montfort-l'Amaury July 26, 1922, to G. JEAN-AUBRY in London. JEAN-AUBRY in London; 4 pages in-8 monogrammed and addressed Le Belvédère, envelope. Returning from his trip to London, he has been in Montfort-l'Amaury for the past two days, "trying to catch up on sleep. If I keep going to bed, I'll eventually get it. And then, La musique et les Nations [a work by G. Jean-Aubry] is there, isn't it? [...] You undoubtedly know [...] that a beautiful sun and an oily sea were waiting for me at the end of the island, that they accompanied me to the French coast, where they kindly took leave of me. Now, after two tropical days, they're cataracts. The ant-lion menagerie itself is threatened. And I have not yet thanked you for all the trouble you have taken to make my stay in London pleasant and fruitful"... On the subject of En marge des marées, he mentions Joseph CONRAD (whose translator was Jean-Aubry): "If you see Conrad, tell him how touched I was by his gift of cigarettes: it's one of those things you don't forget. I even intend to send him a thank-you card if you give me his address, and tell me if I should call him 'dear master'". He received a visit from Roland-Manuel, whom he entrusted with "the record'smusic" requested by Aeolian"... Unabridged. Correspondence, n° 148
