STAËL (Madame de). AUTOGRAPH LETTER addressed to Masclet. Coppet, 29 Thermidor [August 17, 1800]. 3 pp. in-8. Document from the French Ministry of Culture dated 2001 attesting that this property is not considered a national treasure. BEAUTIFUL LETTER to the French lawyer, journalist and senior civil servant Amé-Thérèse-Joseph MASCLET (1760-1833). The Baroness discusses the publication of her book Sur la littérature considérée dans ses rapports avec l'état moral et politique des nations (On literature in relation to the moral and political state of nations), the lack of French knowledge of "northern literature", gives her opinion on French and Swiss politics, speaks of Napoleon as a "hero", and ends by evoking the stay in Switzerland of her friend and lover Benjamin Constant.
