CHINE DYNASTIE TANG (618 - 907)

= Sandstone "sancai" covered candelabra Resting on a short flared foot, with two circular trays rising to a ringed column. The whole covered with splashes of amber and green enamels on a cream background. H. 26.9 cm PROVENANCE Private collection in Paris. A similar model sold by Sotheby's, New York, "Important Chinese Art" sale, September 11, 2019, lot 734. NOTE This elegant candlestick is based on a bronze prototype. The wealth and refinement enjoyed by the Tang elites encouraged the production of many luxury objects, including sophisticated candelabras like this one. A similar piece in the Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art, illustrated by WATSON William in "Tang and Liao Ceramics", London, 1984, pl. 42. Another piece, but with a blue and amber glaze, in the Palace Museum collections, illustrated in "The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Porcelain of the Jin and Tang Dynasties", 1996, Hong Kong, pl. 207. CONDITION Chips to the rim, two restorations to the upper part, firing cracks to the base
