Pierre Bonnard (1867 - 1947) was a French painter, illustrator and engraver. He is known for the stylized decorative qualities of his paintings and his bold use of color. Bonnard was a founding member of the post-impressionist group of avant-garde painters known as Les Nabis. His early work was strongly influenced by the work of Paul Gauguin and Japanese artists such as Hokusai. Bonnard is considered one of the most important painters of the first half of the 20th century and one of the greatest colorists in Western painting. He started out as one of the leading exponents of the Nabis movement, but quickly developed a highly personal style.
