Léon BAROTTE (1866-1933). Lakescape at Chartres. Oil on cardboard panel. Signed lower right. Located lower left. Dimensions : 46 x 63 cm. Provenance: Estate of Monsieur Louis Thirion, furniture from the private mansion built in 1923 by Gibert et Ogé, which has remained in the family ever since. Painter born in Rosières aux Salines in 1866, he died in 1933. Pupil of Züber, Larteau and Edmond Petitjean. A decorator in his early years, having been placed as an apprentice painter by his father, he signed numerous woodwork decorations, marble and wood imitations. Around 1908, he turned to painting, encouraged by his patron Eugène Corbin. He exhibited at the Nancy and Remiremont Salons until 1913, showing landscapes of the Vosges, Nancy and Meuse regions. From 1912, he was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français (in 1929, he exhibited "Fin d'hiver dans une forêt en Lorraine"). He also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants between 1926 and 1930. Until his death, he contributed illustrations to the magazine "Le Pays lorrain". A major retrospective of his work was held at the Galerie THIEBAULT in 1936.
