J.H. WITTFELD, Brussels
Pocket watch in 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold decorated on the back shell with a radiating guilloché engraving enameled with transparent to translucent pinkish-white enamel. This quality of enamel reproduces the sun's rays on a gallant scene in the countryside close to those of Louis-Joseph Watteau of Lille. The scene between the seated lady and the man on her knees could pass for harmless if they were not joined by a bunch of grapes, a symbol of pleasure and even lust. This decoration is surrounded by a border of bluish enamel in the shape of fine foliage. In other words, it's time to rejoin your loved one.
Manual mechanical movement with key (present).
Cylinder escapement.
Painted enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals in 5' divisions.
Very good condition.
Functional at time of appraisal.
Gross weight: 46.4 g.
J.H. Wittfeld is a well-known Brussels watchmaker. In 1854 and 1865, he presented himself in the official journal as running a store and having a fine watchmaking workshop with a "fine and rich assortment of gold and silver watches, from the best Geneva factories. Large selection of Breguet chains and keys".
