SONGYE, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Wood, natural pigments. Superb "Kilume" male dance mask belonging to the "Bwadi bwa kifwebe" initiation society and embodying a spiritual being. The wide, cuboid face is covered with grooves, the protruding mouth is rectangular in cross-section and the nose extends into a high forehead crest. Height: 55.5 cm. Minor accidents and missing parts. Provenance: Private collection of the former Parisian gallery owner FRANKA BERNDT.
