The typology of this Christ is derived from the famous Christ of the Cross by Gero (fig.), preserved in Cologne Cathedral and dating from the 10th century. This large altarpiece crucifix served as a model, conveying a new iconography based on the human reality of the Crucifixion.
It preceded a doctrinal shift, with Jesus presented as suffering, rather than glorious and sovereign.
