French school, second half of the nineteenth century.
Louis XVI style cup.
Marble and gilded bronze.
Measurements: 70 x 35 x 27 cm.
Cran cup or vase of Napoleon period entirely made of marbled marble and decorated with bronze applications. The piece stands on a bronze pedestal, on which rests a circular foot decorated with a bronze sogueada molding, the same material that covers the birth of the belly as a sheath formed by small stems worked leaf by leaf. The ovoid vessel is decorated, at shoulder height, with two heads of goats with robust horns, expressive muzzles and thick beards. Festoons of flowers run along the belly, from side to side of the zoomorphic heads. The burnished gold of the bronzes harmonizes with the natural beauty of the marble in sienna and ochre tones. The plant motifs and fauna remind us of the god Bacchus. The ensemble manages to maintain the classical rigor while leaving room for the ornamental fantasy so much to the taste of the bourgeois clientele of the second half of the 19th century.
