"Le calin", ca. 1960.
Sculpture in patinated bronze and partially cold enameled.
Signed: B. ZACH.

Bruno Zach was a prolific sculptor born in Ukraine but developed his career in Vienna, where he emigrated at a very young age. In the Academy of Fine Arts of the Austrian capital he soaked in the currents of the beginning of the new century, as they could be the modernism or the orientalism. However, it was thanks to his erotic works that he gained great popularity among the society of the time.
"Le callin" or "The Embrace", is one of his best known pieces. Originally made around 1930, a few years before his death, it represents a woman embracing a penis of dreamlike dimensions. It may well have been influenced by the Berlin nightlife, whose prostitutes and gloomy atmospheres often served as inspiration for the artist.
