Pair of sideboards Directory. France, late eighteenth century.
Mahogany wood and gilded metal applications.
Needs refinishing.
Measurements: 104 x 78 x 35 cm.
Pair of sideboards of identical structure, raised on four legs of circular profile narrower towards the base. It has the body divided into two levels, the lower one closed with two sliding shutter doors and the upper one with a shelf with mirrored bottom. The top, in white marble, is supported by two fluted columns that are continued in the lower body of the cabinet. The piece is crowned by a golden metal balustrade structure. This is a pair of furniture that continues the French Directory or neoclassical style, considered a transition between the Louis XVI style and the Empire style, of great functionality and lightness. This decorative simplicity and elegance of lines is common in French furniture, as well as the use of "exotic" woods and the valuation of their grain by arranging large surfaces in these materials (or in the plates), without decorative motifs that interrupt the natural lines created by the grain.
Needs to be overhauled.
