Law stating that every man is free in France, and whatever his color, he enjoys all the rights of a citizen, if he has the qualities prescribed by the Constitution. Given in Paris, October 16th 1791. Bourges, Imprimerie de B. Cristo, s. d. (1791). In 4°, 2 pp. in folio. This law, which implements the decree of the National Assembly of September 28, 1791, was initiated by Dubois Crancé, who wished to proclaim the pure and simple abolition of slavery in the colonies and metropolitan France. As we know, he was not supported, due to resistance from members of the Massiac club in the Assembly. The measure taken did, however, allow for the legal and automatic emancipation of any man of color entering metropolitan France: "Every individual is free as soon as he enters France".
