Hans Richter was a German Dada painter, graphic artist, avant-garde film producer and art historian. In 1965 he wrote the book "Dadaism," on the history of the Dada movement. From expressionism to Dadaism, constructivism and neoplasticism, he was a major figure in avant-garde art in the 1910s and 1920s and a catalyst for intellectuals and artists in many disciplines. Richter helped organize exhibitions that revived interest in Dada, both in the United States and Europe. In 1956 he made "Dadascope," a film devoted to Dada poetry.
The lot includes five sheets from a series of a total of seven produced by La Nuova Foglio Editrice of Pollenza in 1976. Hans Richter disappeared while the work was in print. The entire run, 30 copies in Roman numerals and 99 copies in Arabic numerals, was initialed by the artist's wife, Frida. One can thus well point to these sheets as the artist's last work. The folder, introduced by an essay by Roberto Sanesi and edited by Magdalo Mussio and Gianfranco Berti, contains a selection of thoughts-in ideal dialogue-between Hans Richter and Jean Arp.
