The Royal Autonomous Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine is a Christian monastery located in Sinai, Peninsula of Egypt. Located at the foot of Mount Sinai, built between 548 and 565 and to date the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monastery in the world. The monastery was built by order of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, enclosing what is said to be the burning bush seen by Moses. Centuries later, the alleged body of St. Catherine of Alexandria, said to have been found in the area, was brought to the monastery. St. Catherine's relics turned it into an important pilgrimage site, and the monastery eventually took the saint's name.
