ITALY - SIGISMOND PANDOLFO MALATESTA Lord of Rimini 1432-1468 x SIGISMVNDVS - PANDVLFVS - DE - MALATESTIS.S.RO. ECLESIE.C. GENERALIS. His bust left wearing a mantle over a cuirass. R/. Crowned Fortitude, seated on a seat formed from the front parts of two leaning elephants holding a broken column. In the exergue, * MCCCCXLVI * // Hill 178; Armand I, 20/9; Pollard 26; Kress 61 Bronze medal dated 1446 in Roman numerals by the engraver Matteo de Pasti. Later casting. Flan retouched. Very fine. Expert: Françoise Berthelot-Vinchon Sigismund Malatesta or Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, lord of Rimini, Fano and Cesena from 1295 to 1500. He was born on June 19, 1417 in Brescia and died on October 7, 1468 in Rimini at the age of 57. He was a condottier and member of the Malatesta family. He was famous for his treachery and provocation of the mores of the time. He was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the most formidable military leaders of his time.
