Baule, Ivory Coast, mid-20th century Called "Lawle" by the Baoule, these "mallets" or "hammers" are used to strike the bell-shaped gong. The crescent-shaped upper part is always highly ornamented with anthropomorphic or zoomorphic motifs. The striking part of the mallet is covered with cloth to dampen the sound of the strike on the bell. Baule diviners use this sonorous object for divinatory rituals.
