Bamiléké, Grassland region, Northwest Cameroon, mid 20th century. Beautiful whistle, both zoomorphic with its wide, almost closed crescent-shaped mouthpiece evoking a buffalo head, and anthropomorphic with its stylized human form. Beneath the imposing mouthpiece, two sketchy arms are open to allow the pitch of the sound to be varied. The ringed body flares out into a triangle with suspension holes at the end. This boldly designed whistle, with its geometric shapes and particularly meticulous craftsmanship, boasts a superb glossy black patina with orange highlights.
