Large, prestigious "Kora" (Mandingue, Senegal).
This imposing harp-lute is played by the Griots, who are both poets and musicians. According to erthno-musicologist Francis Bebey: "The kora is one of Africa's most beautiful instruments, both in form and timbre.
Equipped with 19 nylon strings, the instrument is beautifully crafted. Its hemispherical calabash body is covered with animal skin, and a system of keys enables precise tuning. Plant fiber pendants, fabric and cowrie shells adorn the instrument.
Dense wood, calabash, fabric, cowrie shells, nylon.
