Mountain Landscape with Cabin, Carlos de Haes (Brussels, 1826-Madrid, 1898), oil on canvas Oil on canvas, measurements: 90 x 116 cm (Brussels, 1826-Madrid, 1898). Painter of Belgian origin. A crisis in the family economy forced the Haes to move to Spain. He settled in Malaga in 1835, where after a few years he began his artistic journey with the academic painter Luis de la Cruz. In 1850, he decided to continue his training in his native land studying the great Flemish landscape masters, at the same time establishing contact with the European avant-garde that gathered in Brussels around the renowned annual exhibitions at the Salons of the Belgian capital. . His training alongside the landscape painter Joseph Quinaux determined his encounter with plein air painting to which he devoted himself with passion and defined his artistic production in its entirety. With this background, he returned to Spain, presented himself and won, in the first edition of the National Exhibitions, in 1856, a third medal with landscapes taken around the Belgian capital, which opened a gap and breathed life into the archaic and academic structure. of Spanish landscaping. The coincidence in time of the attraction exerted in Haes by the discovery of the places and wild nature around the Monasterio de Piedra and the call for opposition to the landscape plaza of the Higher School of Painting of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, which had been left vacant due to the premature death of its owner, Fernando Ferrant y Llausás, determined his permanence in Spain and his definitive establishment by obtaining in 1857 the aforementioned chair from which, throughout his teaching, he would train in the practice of outdoor painting to an entire generation of landscapers. Parallel to his teaching, he continued with his artistic production, and in 1858 he obtained his first medal at the National Exhibition. Provenance: important Andalusian private collection.
