Julius Bissier Man playing the lute 1920 Oil on canvas, mounted on wood. 151 x 113 cm. Framed. Monogrammed and dated 'JHB, 1920' lower right on the shoes. Signed, monogrammed, inscribed, dated and with notes on technique 'Jul. H. Bissier, JHB, 1920, man playing the lute, color material: mastic and varnish of copal in turpentine + linseed oil'. - Overall in very good condition. Provenance Julius Weismann, Freiburg/Nußdorf near Überlingen; since then in family ownership Baden-Württemberg/North Rhine-Westphalia The composer Julius Weismann (1879-1950) was a friend of Julius Bissier. Bissier portrayed the composer - described by the artist as a "tone poet" - twice and studied Weismann's musical work in detail. For example, there is a design for a stage set for Weismann's opera "Schwanenweiß". Julius Weismann's estate contained around 15 paintings by Bissier.
