The conflict arose from China's opposition to foreign influences in the country, both Western and Japanese. The movement was put down by a coalition, the Alliance of Eight Nations (Austro-Hungarian Empire, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, United Kingdom, United States of America), which further weakened the Chinese government already shaken by the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895).
