EXPLORERS. Set of 2 documents:
- Jean-Baptiste ROLLAND DE KESSANG (1841-1907), naturalist and explorer of Madagascar and Malaya, Consul of Costa Rica.
Photographic portrait with signed autograph, S.l., February 7, 1882. Photograph by Alfred Portal mounted on yellow card. 16.2 x 10.5 cm. "A la famille Michel / Pichon, / souvenir bien amical / JB. Rolland / Voyageur naturaliste à la Presqu'île de Malacca / 1875 à 1881 / 7 - 2 - 82". A simple, self-taught worker, Rolland studied ornithology and taxidermy, particularly of tropical birds. Having saved penny by penny, he sailed for Singapore in 1875, then settled in Kessang in the coastal state of Malacca, a country that no European had yet penetrated. He stayed for 8 years, exploring the forest and its flora and fauna.
