A FINE LACQUER TABAKO-BON (SMOKING SET)
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912)
The portable box of rectangular form with a large silver handle and three cabinet drawers. The rim of the open top has two sloping indentations to hold the kiseru (pipes) and is fitted with a miniature brazier and square ash container each with silver covers with gilt trims. The exterior is covered in dark brown lacquer with nashiji, gold, silver and red lacquer, embellished with gold foil inlay, depicting a marshy swap, speckled with shobu (irises) and oshidori (mandarin ducks). The open top bearing a rich nashiji ground and gold fundame.
SIZE 23 x 16 x 14.5 cm
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, and minuscule nicks to edges and corners.
