Lower part of a beautiful Gupta sculpture
Terracotta
North India, 4th - 6th century, Gupta Empire
Height: 30 cm
H : 16 cm
This fine fragment of terracotta sculpture shows legs in tribhanga posture, the Indian version of the polycephalous chiasm. The body is sensually draped in textile. A second sculpture fragment is included. These two pieces are characteristic of the aesthetics established during the Gupta period, based on an explicit understanding of the human body in all its delicacy, and where the fine drapes of loincloths worn close to the body revealed, as here, the soft curves of the figures.
