Two 'alams processional standards
Cast brass
India, Deccan, 19th - 20th century
50 x21 cm
These two 'alam standards used in Shiite processions are decorated with a central medallion featuring an engraved and openwork circular floral frieze, centered by an inscription. The sinuous chevron-engraved sides end in dragon heads. They are topped by five slender openwork stems. Great fervor surrounds these objects, linked to the Ashura ritual held on the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar.
