First Latin-French edition published by Wechel in 1536. The author, an Italian jurisconsult (1492-1550), taught law in France and Italy, his choice of law based on the advice of his avarice, which was matched only by his intemperance (Larousse). He left his mark on the history of law by being one of the first to illuminate the study of this science by means of ancient history, languages and literature. He also remains famous for his emblemata, which were published in numerous editions. The work was first published in Latin in 1522, and went through several editions before being published in French in 1536. It contains 113 emblems, each with a woodcut illustration, a quatrain in Latin printed in round type and the French translation printed in gothic type. The woodcuts are mostly a free interpretation of those in the Augsburg edition (1531), and are partly attributed to Mercure Jollat. There are two editions with a date of 1536, differing only in title, but with identical main body. Bibliographers do not agree on the precedence of one or the other. Our copy has the date printed in upper and lower case, a first printing according to Adams and a second printing according to Bechtel. Binding previously restored. Staining in the lateral margins of the first 8 leaves. Engravings and text have often discharged onto the facing leaf, and the discharges have been redrawn in ink on 8 leaves. on 11 leaves.
