First edition of these two booklets published in tribute to Gilles Bourdin, advisor to the King's Privy Council, Attorney General at the Paris Parliament and scholar and patron of the arts.
Born in 1515, Gilles Bourdin was an avocat général before being appointed procureur général du Roi. A true humanist, he knew Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and wrote a commentary on Aristophanes and paraphrases on edicts in these languages. His death in 1570 prompted many writers to pay tribute to him. His
Tombeau are twenty-four pieces by seventeen authors, in French, Latin, Greek and Hebrew verse, by
Dorat, Pasquier, Baïf, Jodelle, Belleforest, Desportes, Thevet, etc.
François d'Amboise (1550-1619), himself a magistrate and poet, was particularly close to Gilles Bourdin, and wrote his own
Tombeau in Latin and French.
