Rare collection of five works of poetry published by the Angelier brothers between 1542 and 1553.
First edition of
Secret d'amours de
Michel d'Amboise, de
La Nouvelle Venus by
François Habert, the
Hymne sur la naissance de Madame Marguerite de France by
Olivier de Magny, the translation of
La Pandore by
Janus Olivier and the second edition of
Livre des visions fantastiques by
François Habert.
The
Secret d'amours, given by De Backer as extremely rare, contains gallant letters in prose and verse, rondeaux, ballads and epigrams.
The Livre des visions fantastiques, recounting the ill-fated love affairs of two lovers, is followed by various poetic pieces by François Habert, an
Oraison à Jésus Christ, an
Églogue sur la mort d'Erasme, various speeches...
The New Venus is chaste and her love is all spiritual.
La Pandore suggests that women are the Pandora's box from which all the evils of this world have sprung, and Olivier de Magny's work is self-explanatory in its title.
The first four books bear the Angeliers mark on the first and last leaves, and the fifth volume features a handsome scrolled architectural title frame.
A fine copy in an attractive contemporary binding.
Binding previously restored.
Beginning of a split at one hinge and a few stains on the boards.
