Remy BELLEAU. La Bergerie..., divisée en une premiere & seconde Iournee. - La seconde Iournée de la Bergerie. Ibid, id, 1572. 2 parts in a small in-8 volume, ivy-green jansenist morocco, 5-ribbed spine, interior roulette and fillets, gilt edges, slipcase ( Aussourd). Brunet, I-752 // Tchemerzine-Scheler, I-543-544. (4 f.)-106 f.-(2 f.) / 108 f. (misfigured 110) // ã4, A-N8, O4 / a-n8, o4 / 94 x 167 mm. Second edition, partly original. Remy Belleau (1528-1577) was one of the most admired members of the Pléiade. Secretary to Charles de Lorraine, to whom La Bergerie is dedicated La Bergerie, and tutor to his son, he remained attached to the latter all his life, in whose home he died. Viollet-Le-Duc describes his compositions as pure, graceful, elegant, even witty for the most part, but criticizes them for lacking the unexpected. In La Bergerie, forerunner of the French pastoral genre, Belleau interweaves verse and prose based on the Italian models of Sannazar's Arcadie and Boccaccio's Amato by Boccaccio. He also intersperses various pieces composed in his youth. The Bergerie first appeared in 1565. In this second edition, Belleau adds a second entirely new second day. Each Journée has its own title page and foliotation, but they must be together. A fine copy despite the faded spine. Very small loss at the head of folio l4.
