French poet Amadis Jamyn was born in Chaource, Champagne, around 1540 and died in 1593. His teachers were Dorat and Turnèbe, who gave him a solid education, and his classmate was Ronsard, who took a liking to him and had him appointed secretary to the chamber of Charles IX. He cultivated poetry and made a name for himself in the literary world. On the death of Charles IX, he retired to his home town, where he died young.
This volume, whose edition was shared between Robert Le Mangnier and Mamert Patisson, is divided into five books:
Ce qui s'adresse à leurs Maiestez,
Orianne,
Callirée,
Artemis and
Meslanges. It is a collection of sonnets, songs, odes, epistles, elegies, etc., printed in italic type and adorned with bands, lettrines and fleurons.
A superb copy in contemporary gilt vellum, ruled and with wide margins.
Old restoration at foot of spine and second board. Marginal loss to one leaf due to initial leaf size, stain to one leaf (Bb1).
Provenance: Charles Bourdin (handwritten bookplate dated
1683)
