Louise LABÉ.
Euvres..., du debat de Folie & d'Amour.
Small in-8, burgundy morocco with large small-iron decoration consisting of a frame with spandrels and a large central finial linked to the frame by fine stippled fillets, beautifully decorated 5-rib spine, interior lace, gilt edges over marbling, case (
Bauzonnet-Trautz).
Brunet, III-709 // Tchemerzine-Scheler, III-782.
87 f. (of 88, the last most likely blank missing here) / A-L8 / 68 x 111 mm.
A rare fourth edition, published one year after the original.
The
Œuvres de Louise Labé were first published in Lyon by Jean de Tournes in 1555, and were followed the next year by a reprint by the same publisher, with the few errors of the original corrected. The same year also saw the publication of an edition that Brunet describes as a forgery, lacking an ode in Greek.
The present edition appeared in Rouen, also in 1556. It is, according to Brunet,
no less rare than that of 1555, of which it appears to be a copy.
All these editions are very rare.
Three editions of Louise Charly's Œuvres, printed during her lifetime, are so rare as to be considered unobtainable (Viollet-Le-Duc).
This work consists of
Debat de Folie et d'Amour, a prose dialogue printed in round letters involving Love, Folly, Jupiter, Apollo, Venus and Mercury.
The
Débat is followed by
Elegies and
Sonnets printed in italics and a final section entitled
Escriz de divers poëtes, à la louenge de Loyse Labé Lionnoize which contains various pieces in Greek, Latin, French and Italian.
A delightful copy in a fine binding by Bauzonnet-Trautz.
