(4 f.)-181 f. (f.94 blank missing here)-(1 f.) / *4, A-Z4, a-y4, z2 / 140 x 225 mm.
First complete and largely original edition.
Born in Loudun in 1536, Scévole de Sainte-Marthe studied in Paris under Turnèbe, Ramus and Muret, and was a pupil of Ronsard and Baïf. He held a number of senior positions before becoming comptroller general of finances in Poitou, then mayor of Poitiers in 1579 and 1602. He died in 1623. His poetic works enjoyed great success during his lifetime. For Viollet-Le-Duc,
the last literary representative of the 16th century.
Over the course of the various editions, Sainte-Marthe revisits the composition of his collections, as well as certain parts of his poems. This edition, containing some eighty more pieces than the 1569 edition and arranged in a different order, is divided into five parts: the
Poems, the
Palingene, the
Amour and Epigrams, various sonnets and the
Métamorphoses chrestiennes.
As Tchemerzine points out, folio 94, which is generally blank, bears in some copies a poem by Remy Belleau, printed twice. The error was probably corrected during printing, and this sheet, replaced by a blank, is missing from most copies.
A fine copy despite a dark mark on the second cover and a few small scattered stains.
Provenance: Barbet (old handwritten bookplate and old markings on title).
