Partly original second edition of Essais, containing the first two books reworked and enlarged. Published in 1580, the Essais met with immediate success. Montaigne never ceased to correct and expand their content. Only two years after the original publication, Montaigne has published a new edition with the same publisher, with modifications and additions, in attractive type, finer and sharper than that of the first (Le Petit). A copy that conforms in every respect to the one described by Sayce, with the same pagination errors. A fine copy despite minor wear to the corners. An old correction in ink (f. D7), a few browned leaves (B1, B8 and quires P and Rr) and small scattered stains not serious. Provenance: Luch.
