Juz' 26 from the Koran.
Egypt, Mamluk art, 14th-15th century.
Arabic manuscript on paper. Twenty-sixth part of the Qur'an (Suras 46 to 51, v. 20). 29 folios (58 numbered pages). Text of 7 lines per page in naskh script in black ink and sura titles and marginal inscriptions in gold. Gold separating rosettes punctuated with red and blue. Frontispiece page comprising an illuminated cartouche with an oval silver and illuminated medallion, inscribed with the juz' number in white characters edged in gold, and a poly-lobed roundel, decorated with flowers on red, blue or silver backgrounds, enclosing a hexagon inscribed in red characters on three lines. The final page is adorned with a roundel flanked by four rosettes and containing two lines of inscriptions in white and gold characters ("Only the purified should touch it").
Bound in brown leather with stamped and gilded decoration of a mandorla with pendentives and small flowered spandrels. The inside of the boards is lined with palmettes with interlaced stems.
