James Gillray (1756-1815)
Siège de la colonne de Pompée - Science in the Pillory. 1799. Etching. 420x550. A very fine proof on strong white vellum, in fine contemporary colors. Framer's annotations in pencil on verso. Good margins. Framed.
Satirical print about the Egyptian campaign, showing a mission of scientists, geometers and scholars (including Monge and Berthollet) accompanying Napoleon. Attacked by natives, they take refuge at the top of Pompey's column.
Note: this is a proof of a reprint made by Bohn in 1851.
