The man in this image is unmistakably a soldier. The bayoneted rifle in his hand proves it, as do the rifles on his cap, just hinted at, which are enough to anchor this figure in the Civil War. And yet, with his suspenders and heavy canvas shirt, Henry has retained something of the peasant he once was. And you can see in his eyes a restlessness, a questioning. What kind of man is he really?
If in one hundred and thirty plates, with six or eight squares per plate, you don't have the cover image of the album, something must be wrong... Even if you have to crop it or add a detail. So I chose this image of Henry, which I really like. It shows his two faces: a bright side, dreaming of glory and seeing himself as great among others, and a darker side of doubt and cowardice that reveals itself to him. S.C.
